I Was There
Luma Elpidio
💡 Meaning:
Jesus was present in every story — and in yours too!
The song “I Was There” (English version of “Lá Estava Eu”) by Luma Elpidio is a powerful reflection on the constant presence of Jesus in human life. The lyrics invite us to recognize that in every miracle, in every encounter recorded in Scripture, our own story is also there. We are like those who received the touch of a miracle, the gaze of grace, and the forgiveness of God's love. The song speaks about identification and redemption. Just like the woman with the issue of blood, blind Bartimaeus, or the centurion who believed, each of us finds our own experience of faith and transformation. Every verse reminds us that when Christ became flesh, He came to dwell among us and restore our life. In the chorus, the song expresses a deep feeling of gratitude: He loved me, He chose me. This phrase symbolizes the unconditional love of Jesus, who stops on the road just to find us. Even without understanding why, we know we were reached by the victory of the cross. “I Was There” is a poetic confession that we were represented in every act of salvation described in the Bible. And even today, He continues to walk beside us, restoring hearts and bringing hope to all who seek Him.
The Word became flesh
And dwelt among us
To redeem all humanity
It was God Himself who came
And there I was, there I was
The woman with the issue of blood
Or the centurion who believed in Him
There I was
The man possessed in the tombs
Or maybe even blind Bartimaeus
There I was, I was there
A simple fisherman with empty hands
Or Nicodemus, hiding in the dark
There I was, somewhere in that story
If I look closely at it
I know I can find myself
And He loved me, He chose me
He stopped by the side of the road
Just to see if it was me
The Word became flesh
And dwelt among us
To redeem all humanity
It was God Himself who came
And there I was
One of the ten lepers on the road
Maybe not the one who came back to give thanks
There I was
An adulterous woman caught in sin
Or a rich young man who walked away in shame
There I was, I was there
Martha, always busy doing
Or maybe Mary, sitting just to listen
There I was, somewhere in that story
If I look closely at it
I know I can find myself
And He loved me, He chose me
What He saw in me that day
I could never understand
But the Word became flesh
And dwelt among us
To redeem my iniquity
It was God Himself who came
On the cross between two thieves
One believed and one denied
To which side would I look and say
That there I was?
